Political and norms for the presentation of articles

GENERAL APPEARANCES

The Cuban Journal of Rheumatology, is a scientific publication edited for the first time in 1998 with a biannual periodicity, and from 2012 presents a minimum periodicity of four times a year, with the possibility to publish the supplements that are necessary  according to criteria of the publishing committee; which manages  under the responsibility of the Cuban Society of Rheumatology and the National Group of Rheumatology, and receives contributions related with the rheumatics illnesses , other subjects related  to health and educational- pedagogic articles that contribute to the professional high level of their readers.

The journal uses the system Open Journal System to guarantee the publishing process in network;  consequently,  the author, previous registration  in the website of the journal (http://www.revreumatologia.sld.cu), will have to upload his article once it declare to have fulfilled a group of compulsory requirements (see tutorial). From then, it will be able to  give follow-up inside the own place, to the state of his contribution through the own platform, from the which also will receive the different notifications along the publishing process.

If it presented difficulties to send the article through the internal system of the Open Journal System in that it finds  the journal, can send the manuscript in Office Word application  with Arial letter, number 12 and title and subtitles with greater numbers, and the rest of  the orientations of edition properly fulfilled to the following electronic direction  reumatologia@infomed.sld.cu

The journal uses an anonymous system of review by pairs (peer review) asmuch for the author as for the appraiser. This process of external evaluation of scientific articles, also well-known as arbitration, carries  forward by experts that value the merits and deficiencies of the manuscript. His criteria are remitted to the editor, who will adopt a decision in relation with the publication or not of the manuscript; if it is considered timely, his suggestions are sending to the author to improve the quality of the work. This process can repeat as many times as it was necessary.

It should be underline that the documents sent by the authors are considered confidential during the whole evaluation process. Only in case to decide publish it, will communicate his content to third people. Consistently, the arbitress and editors must abstain to communicate to anybody extraneous to the Publishing Committee appearance any of the work under his consideration.

Once that the arbitress and editors of the magazine approved the possibility to publish the contributions, considered  the articles in phase of previous print pending of the final layout according to the characteristics of the journal, and will be able to incorporate  in the announcement of the next number for communicative ends and curricular of the authors, using a different format to the same of the final termination.

The article that accept  once arbitrated and layout , has the possibility to publish  according to the volume and number so that it have assigned  without expecting that the number in question this totally concluded one, being able to incorporate new articles to the current number in successive deliveries once finalized the phase of layout whenever they do not coincide or exceed the date of the next number to publish. This will speed up the circulation of the articles, avoiding unnecessary delays by own bureaucratic questions of the processes of edition.

To upload an article, the author has to declare from an explicit way at the end of the manuscript which his conflicts of interests are if these exist, or to inform in contrary case that does not have them; simultaneously to clarify it in the dialogue that is presented  for these effects to the moment to include the metadata of the individually article for each author, in front of the possibility that they exist conflicts of interests no generalized in the whole of the authors. To this respect, can consult the Publishing Statement of conflicts of interests of the authors in the scientific magazines .

PRESENTATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

The manuscript should be written in Spanish language, in letter Arial number 12, in double space and with margins of 2.5 cm.  It has to avoid the use of non conventional abbreviation, and the citation of medicines should be using its generic name.

The articles should to be elaborated in Office Word application, the graphics, charts and figures do not have to exceed of ten, and should be inserted in the places  where correspond inside the text.

The initial page has to contain complete title in Spanish and English, the section of the journal e for which propose, complete name and two surnames of all the authors in order of participation in the same one, his/her more important qualification or university degree, its electronic address, and the address of the responsible author of the correspondence, department and institutions where carried out the work.

Each one of the title and subtitles sections should use a number of greater letter than Arial 12, that is the indicated in the text of the work.

Next the summary should be included that can be structured or no,  without limits of words, not including use of abbreviations and followed by among three to ten keywords, preferably taken of the group of descriptors of sciences of the health, or that represent the fundamental content of the article. Later on it has to contain the abstrac, and the keywords, translated to the English language.

Later on  it includes the content of the work followed of the bibliography that should have the indicated format for each section of the journal.

The final page should be a document that explains the originality of the manuscript, the authorship and the order of the list of the authors and has to be signed by all the authors.

Appreciated Editor,

We send the following article so that it is valued by the publishing Committee of his magazine, be it subjected to the necessary arbitration and endorsed if it can be published in the same one. The authors, undersigned, declare that this manuscript is original, that was not published before, neither have been sent to another publisher neither organ of scientific diffusion.

We ratify that the manuscript was read  and that it was approved by all the signatories authors and that do not exist other authors that are part of him unless does already mentioned.

We also confirm that the order of the authors that appears in the manuscript was approved by all. We understand that the author for correspondence will be the only contact for the publishing process and the only responsible of the communication with the other authors on the progress of the sending, the review of the manuscript and of his final approval.

The authors that publish in this journal agree with the following terms:

These conserve the rights of author and concede to the journal the right of the first publication, fulfilling with the license Creative Commons Attribution License that allows to others to share the work with recognition of the authorship of their articles, and the initial publication in this journal. To expand these orientations can review the notes of authors rights.

The peculiarities for the redaction of each section of the journal, are explained  in detail in the section of the politics of sections of the magazine. They prefer and it will give  priority to the original articles, and particularly to the ones of investigation; that should have the following format:

ORIGINAL ARTICLE OF INVESTIGATION

They will be considered original articles of investigation, those investigations so much of quantitative type like qualitative, exploratory, correlated, cuasi experimental or experimental pure,  that have not been published in any modality neither by the author neither by another person, as well as that are not being considered with this purpose by another magazine or scientific communication. The author should declare explicitly that fulfils these requirements.

It should include the number of authors that have participated in an objective way in the investigation and avoid include those that they do not have a justified work contribution. If some collaborator needs to be mentioned, can do it in the section of the gratitude.

In studies that have a wide participation of researchers, can be mentioned to all, should include in the credits the name of the group or work team that carried out the investigation, and attach a letter directed to the editor, explaining the participation of each one of them.

ABSTRAC: should be writing in impersonal style and in past time, in structured form or not, that contain the following paragraphs, brief introduction, the aims of the work, the used methods, the main results and conclusions; of not keeping the structured format, it should be developed these paragraphs in the same one. It does not have to surpass the 300 words.

They should be consign between three and ten WORDS or KEY SENTENCES to facilitate to index the work. It is prefer  the author find the words or sentences selected inside the group of the health sciences descriptors, that can consult in the place DeCS; nevertheless, they can be related with the main thematic of the article representing to the same one, although it do not find  among the health science descriptors.

INTRODUCTION: has to draft in present time when it refer to facts established and to the previous knowledge; it will contain the theoretical frame that it has to treat to embrace in shape brief from the historical appearances until the current state of the thematic in question, has to include the or the investigation questions to those wants to answer, define the purpose and the reasons that motivate the work, the hypotheses if it has them, and the or the aims of the study. It should be avoided realize an extensive review of the literature.

DEVELOPMENT: It will be able to adopt a flexible structure in dependency of the type of communication that it treats   whenever they respect   guidelines of elementary coherence, and should consisted of different sections in the studies of investigation. These can be:

METHODS: They are edited in past time; they should have sufficient information that allows to reproduce the work by other researchers, the type of investigation including the place where realized, the population and sample, the time of length, and the method used for the statistical analyses; to be necessary, the recommended ethical appearances when people or their samples, or laboratory animals are manipulate. 

This structure won`t be demanded in review or didactic works, of opinion, of presentations or series de cases, brief communications, criticize, cases of images, sketch, letters or publishers that do not adjust to this classic demand of investigation articles based in empirical data obtained by the researcher.

RESULTS: They are draft in past time, have to be clear and concise, and can be represented in tables or charts that should not duplicate the informations of the text.

DISCUSSION: I is drafts  in past when it refers to the results obtained in the work, in present when it refers  to established facts and previous knowledge with that compare  the results, and the future will be used, when it refers  to perspectives of works that will be realized or recommend to realize of agreement to the obtained results;  it has to be concise, interpreting the results in the context of the current bibliography with that relates . They should not include data that have not been described in the results. It is convenient that do not exceed to the half of the number of pages of the article.

CONCLUSIONS: They draft in past; they can go included at the end of the discussion or like a subhead aside. They should be derived of the properly work like statements that layout off of the realized study and coincide with the aims traced in the investigation. They should not be a simple repetition of the results, have to be legitimate preparations that synthesize that can take out in clear of the article.

GRATITUDES: They head to the people or institutions that facilitated and contributed with technical, sending of patients or samples to the authors of the work; they can include people that suggested or helped to solve difficulties presented during their execution.

TABLES, CHARTS and FIGURES: They should not be upper to 10 in total, distributing them in the type that adapts  more to the article; they should be pointed out in the top with Arabic numbers according to appearance order after the  type to the refer  of graphic, tables or figures, and to a space, the name of the same, [example.: “Table 1 Relationship between the sex and moment of debut of the illness]”, they have to  locate inside the text where the author believe more guessed right, the additional explanations like the sources of information, explanation of abbreviations or other if it carries them, they should be written in the foot of the same,  the tables presented  in text format (not in images), created for those effects by the command of tables of the  texts editor of Office Word application.  The charts and figures should have the sufficient quality to be able to identify what suggest with ease and without been lent to confusion; the figures should be preferably in jpg or gif formats that allow their manipulation according to merits the edition of the article.  As much the charts like the figures taken of other texts, should have the explanation of the article or book where they were extracted and the electronic address of their location if these they are of Internet. The publishing committee can modify the place of presentation inside the text according to own necessities of the edition of the article.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCES: They will be presented according to the “Uniform Requirements for manuscripts sent to biomedical magazines following the Vancouver Norms". The appointments should be updated with at least the 50 % of the last five years, will be mark out by means of Arabic number and according to appearance order inside the text, between bracket or in shape of superscript, aligned with the writing, and later to the sign of punctuation of the paragraph that correspond with the idea that is related.

Journal article:

Surname(s) followed of the initials of the names of the authors separate by comma; the first six participants should be mentioned; if it has more than six authors puts  on  next to the last one after a comma et al; although it prefers appoint all the authors; full stop, the title of the work; full stop, the name of the magazine in abbreviation; (full stop), the year in that it published  the article, here can include the separate month by a space; (semicolon), without leaving space, the volume; without leaving space and between parenthesis the number of the magazine; to be a supplement includes  the abbreviation  Suppl. a  space and the number of the supplement inside the parenthesis; without leaving space two points, the pages in that it is separated by a short script, finishes  with full stop.

When necessary include the pages, the sign that goes after the year is full stop, an space, the letter p in tiny followed of a full stop, and to finish with the page or the pages divided by a short dash.

Note: independently of the examples showed to quote a work, the publishing committee suggests that they review the Vancouver Norms located in the following electronic address: "Uniform requirements for manuscripts sent to biomedical journals " to know all the modalities of bibliographic appointments according to these norms, as well as that prioritize the obtained appointments of scientific articles of scientific journals that can be reviewed by the editors through Internet. On the other hand, appointments of works are not accepted that come from of places or journals doubtful for example, web pages, personal blog, journals or books that are not certified properly.

Special Article

It will be a short article, written by some personality of the national health system, or recognized internationally that has a direct and affective relationship with the community represented by the journal, disclosing novel aspects related to the medical scientific field in which the readers are positioned and authors of the journal, as well as the Cuban Society of Rheumatology, the National Rheumatology Group and its public health policies.

If you include bibliography, you must present the characteristics described in the original articles, you must include a title in English.

Editorial

It must be a non-extensive article of a scientific or opinion nature.
Those of a scientific nature should deal with a punctual and interesting update on a topic related to the specialty or another related to represent the magazine.
The opinion publishers will present points of view or scientific reports related to the community they represent.
Editorials will be commissioned by the Editorial Committee. They can include up to 4 tables or figures.

It may or may not include bibliography; if they do, they will not be restricted in number. These can be made up of bibliographic citations or Internet sites that endorse or argue the data referred to in the editorial for better understanding, and must present the characteristics described in the original articles.

Must include title in English.

Letter to the director

They will be articles addressed to the editor of the journal in order to inform him of any relevant fact from a scientific, teaching or assistance point of view related to the specialty of rheumatology, that the importance of his scope merits publication in the journal.

It should not be extensive articles, trying not to exceed the two pages, which may or may not be supported by citations, which must have the characteristics described in the original articles, must include title in English.

Letters to the editor

The letter to the editor constitutes a brief comment in agreement or disagreement with aspects contained in the published works and that may be related to methodologies, interpretations or results of some research.

The letters allow the exchange of ideas and opinions between authors and readers of the journal, this being a dynamic activity that triggers the exchange of correspondence making the intermediate period between the receipt and acceptance of the article very short.

The title must be informative and allowances not accepted in other original articles are allowed. The extension of the letter should not be extensive trying not to exceed two pages. Bibliographic references are also accepted, which must not exceed ten and must have the characteristics described in the original articles.

Original research article

Original research articles will be considered, those investigations of quantitative or qualitative type, exploratory, correlational, quasi experimental or pure experimental, that have not been published in any modality neither by the author nor by another person, as well as that are not being considered. to that end by another journal or scientific media. The author must state explicitly that he meets this requirement.

It must include the number of authors who have participated objectively in the investigation and avoid including those who do not have a justified work contribution. If any collaborator needs to be mentioned, you can do so in the section of acknowledgments.

In studies that involve a wide participation of researchers, they can be mentioned to all, having to include in the credits the name of the group or team that did the research, and attach a letter addressed to the editor, explaining the participation of each of them .

ABSTRAC: must be written in impersonal style and in the past tense, in a structured or not, containing the following sections, brief introduction, the objectives of the work, the methods used, the main results and conclusions; of not maintaining the structured format, if these sections should be developed in it. It should not exceed 300 words.

Between three and ten WORDS or KEY PHRASES should be consigned to facilitate the indexing of the work. It is preferred that the author obtain the selected words or phrases within the set of health science descriptors, which can be consulted on the DeCS site; However, they may be related to the main theme of the article, representing it, even if it is not among the descriptors of health sciences.

INTRODUCTION must be written in the present tense when it refers to established facts and prior knowledge; It will contain the theoretical framework that should try to cover briefly from the historical aspects to the current state of the subject in question, it should include the research question (s) to be answered, define the purpose and the reasons that motivate the work, the hypotheses if you have them, and the objectives of the study. An extensive review of the literature should be avoided.

DEVELOPMENT: You can adopt a flexible structure depending on the type of communication in question provided that guidelines of elementary coherence are respected, and must consist of sub-classes in the research studies. These might be:

METHODS: Written in the past tense; they must have sufficient information to allow the work to be reproduced by other researchers, the type of research including the place where it was carried out, the population and sample, the duration, and the method used for the statistical analyzes; if necessary, the ethical aspects recommended when handling people or their samples, or laboratory animals.

This structure will not be required in revision or didactic works, opinion, presentations or case series, brief communications, criticism, cases of images, semblances, letters or editorials that do not conform to this classic demand for research articles based on in empirical data obtained by the researcher.

RESULTS: They are written in the past tense, they must be clear and concise, and they can be represented in tables or graphs that should not duplicate the information in the text.

DISCUSSION: It is written in the past when it refers to the results obtained in the work, in the present when it refers to established facts and previous knowledge with which the results are compared, and the future will be used, when it refers to perspectives of works that will be carried out or recommend performing according to the results obtained; it must be concise, interpreting the results in the context of the current bibliography with which it is related. They should not include data that has not been described in the results. It is convenient that it does not exceed half the number of pages of the article.

CONCLUSIONS: They are written in the past; they can be included at the end of the discussion or as a separate subtitle. They must be derived from the work itself as statements that emerge from the study carried out and coincide with the objectives set out in the research. They should not be a simple repetition of the results, they should be legitimate elaborations that synthesize what can be made clear from the article.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: They are addressed to the people or institutions that facilitated and contributed with techniques, patient shipments or samples

Opinion article

It is an article in which the author or authors present their opinion in the context of a review on a specific topic related to health or teaching of medicine, of importance to the medical community and that needs to be updated or made known.

It must include a summary title and key words in Spanish and English; and in the text, at least, introduction, development and conclusions.

You can include tables and figures that will follow the same rules as for the original articles. The bibliography should present the characteristics described in the original articles.

Review article

Taking into account that it is an electronic publication, the maximum length of the works will not be restricted, but the authors must avoid exceeding 20 pages. Optionally the work may include tables and figures (which will follow the same rules as for the original articles). The review articles should be made on the most up-to-date bibliography of the subject in question (More than 50% of the bibliography consulted in the last 5 years and more than 25 of the last 3 years).

It must include a summary title and key words in Spanish and English

They will consist of an introduction, which includes the purpose of the review and the methods used to locate the bibliography to be reviewed; development, a fundamental part of the review and conclusions, which should synthesize the essence of the review and be written in a paragraph.

The authors will present the revised topic critically, expressing the criteria of their practical experience. It should never be a simple transcription of the reviewed bibliography. The bibliography should present the characteristics described in the original articles.

Short Communication

Short communications are not very extensive scientific articles, with the objective of publicizing a hypothesis, or partial results of a research, that needs to be made known to the scientific community, include introduction, method explaining the essential elements for the development of the work, results if you have them, and a discussion that should not be very extensive, expressing its essential elements.

It can include up to four tables, figures or illustrations that will follow the same rules as the original articles, and must not include more than 20 bibliographical citations that must present the characteristics described in the original articles.

Studies of cases

They will be articles not very extensive that intend to disclose particularities of patients or series of cases that have any of the following characteristics: conditions not common in the medical field, adverse reactions to unexpected medications, outcomes or evolutions not characteristic of a disease, association of two or more nosological entities in the same patient, identification for the first time of a disease in a medical field or geographic area, description for the first time of a surgical act or medical manipulation, high frequency with which an entity is presented and possibilities of not being well interpreted; all of which makes it a necessity to disclose it.

They will have the following structure: summary title and key words in Spanish and English, then introduction (includes the objective); presentation of the case (the entire presentation will be reflected in chronological order, from the time the patient was seen for the first time to the outcome); discussion, where personal opinions about the case must be collected.

If images of a patient's disease situation are used, the possibility of their identification should be protected by some method, as well as avoid including names, surnames or initials, a medical record number or a care center, in order to preserve the privacy of the patient. . It is an article in which he or the authors present an educational document for health sciences, which is useful to incorporate new knowledge, written in a didactic way aimed at developing practical theoretical activities such as self-assessment exercises, guidance to review of new literature, as well as links to sites and portals that provide courses, workshops, scientific events, diploma courses, doctorates or any educational teaching activity.

It must include title, summary and keywords in Spanish and English; and in the text, at least, introduction, development of the teaching topic and conclusions, which may include guidelines for practical self-assessment activities, links to other web pages, or suggestions to other articles or texts to broaden knowledge about the topic.
