Eficacia de la curcumina oral para reducir el dolor en pacientes con osteoartritis de rodilla. Revisión sistemática.

Introducción: La osteoartritis es hoy en día la afección musculoesquelética progresiva más común. Se estima que afecta a unos 240 millones de personas en el mundo, siendo la articulación más afectada la rodilla. Los principales síntomas son dolor, rigidez, y problemas de movilidad. Recientemente se ha propuesto el uso de la curcumina en estos pacientes. La curcumina es un fitoquímico natural, polifenol hidrofóbico con efectos antioxidantes y antiinflamatorios.
Objetivo: Realizar una revisión sistemática sobre la eficacia de la curcumina oral para reducir el dolor en pacientes con osteoartritis de rodilla.
Método: Se seleccionaron ensayos clínicos aleatorizados controlados, realizados en humanos, llevados a cabo en los últimos diez años. La principal base de datos usada ha sido PubMed, a través de la plataforma National Library of Medicine.
Resultados: La curcumina oral es eficaz para reducir el dolor en pacientes con osteoartrisits de rodilla. La muestra total fue de 798 pacientes de siete ensayos. La cantidad de curcumina fue variable siendo en la mayoría de 500 mgr 3 veces al día. La duración total del tratamiento osciló entre 28 días y 12 semanas. La aplicación del tratamiento fue segura y no se produjeron efectos adversos graves.
Conclusiones: La curcumina oral es eficaz para reducir el dolor, mejorar la rigidez y la función física en pacientes con osteoartrisits de rodilla. Este tratamiento podría ser una opción alternativa al uso de analgésicos como el ibuprofeno, diclofenaco o celecoxib, con menores efectos adversos y mejor tolerancia en los pacientes.
