Introduction: Artificial intelligence technologies constitute a technological resource that has been implemented in various fields. Its insertion and implementation in the educational field can offer important benefits if used properly. However, for this it is necessary to have an adequate level of knowledge about how it is used.
Objective: Identify the level of knowledge about artificial intelligence in higher medical education teachers.
Methods: A basic and descriptive research was carried out, which included as a universe 37 teachers from higher medical education in the Chimborazo province. The sample consisted of 35 teachers. An instrument was applied to each teacher to obtain information related to the general characteristics and their self-perception of the level of knowledge for the use of artificial intelligence technologies.
Results: Average age of 53.29 years, with a predominance of female teachers (60.00%) and with 10 or more years of teaching experience (31.43%). 68.57% of teachers reported an insufficient level of self-perceived knowledge about artificial intelligence. Self-preparation was the form of training most used by university teachers (48.57%).
Conclusions: Teachers have the self-perception of an insufficient level of knowledge about the use of artificial intelligence. The main form of preparation referred to was self-preparation, showing the need for universities to include courses related to the use of artificial intelligence technologies in their training offer.
