Abstract

Introduction: Chronic childhood malnutrition is a highly common condition; its implications include, among others, increased morbidity due to the presence of chronic diseases, including autoimmune diseases. It is necessary to identify the effects of this disease on the immune system and the etiopathogenic mechanisms that generate autoimmune diseases.

Objective: To analyze the effects of chronic childhood malnutrition as a triggering factor for autoimmune diseases in childhood.

Development: A critical analysis is conducted of the pathophysiological effects of chronic childhood malnutrition on the proper functioning of the immune system. The relationship between altered immunity and the onset of autoimmune diseases in childhood is established. The mechanism of the onset of the sustained inflammatory process that constitutes the starting point for the onset of autoimmune diseases is characterized.

Conclusions: Chronic childhood malnutrition affects the functional balance of the immune system, leading to the development of a sustained inflammatory process that is the etiopathogenic substrate of autoimmune diseases in childhood.
