Analysis of risk factors for gonarthrosis in women aged 40 to 60 years at a center specializing in integrative medicine

Introduction: Currently, knee osteoarthritis (OA), also known as gonarthrosis, has an incidence of 23.9% worldwide; it mostly affects women, frequently occurring after age 50.
Objective: To identify the prevalence of the main risk factors (RF) associated with OA in the female population between 40 and 60 years of age, patients at the Specialized Center for Integrative Medicine (CEMI).
Materials and methods: A descriptive, observational, case series study was conducted with female patients between 40 and 60 years of age in the acupuncture service of CEMI, from August 1 to November 30, 2023. RF associated with OA were evaluated.
Results: The RFs observed in the population sample were overweight (87%), and the most common comorbidity was DM2 (42%).
Conclusions: The risk factors detected were overweight and DM2; while: knee joint injury, occupation, standing, knee angulation and hereditary-family history were not significant.
