Introduction: Osteoporosis is a disease with a high incidence and prevalence worldwide, with significant clinical, social, economic impact, in relation to population aging and clinically silent, making early diagnosis difficult and. Osteoporotic fractures cause loss of healthy life years due to disability and decreased survival. There are multiple risk factors associated with osteoporosis. Knowing the main vulnerable groups is a challenge. Proper knowledge of risk factors and prevention strategies allows for the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits that prevent fractures and minimize their after-effects.
Objective: To identify risk factors for osteoporosis in patients diagnosed with the disease who present to internal medicine clinics.
Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in patients with osteoporosis using bone densitometry who attended the medical clinic of the Center for Medical-Surgical Research from January to June 2023.
Results: Females represented 82.42% of the patients, while the 53-62 age group represented 39.56%. Among the personal medical history, high blood pressure accounted for 34.07%. The most frequently affected region was the lumbar spine, at 54.95%. Smoking accounted for 18.68% of the risk factors observed.
Conclusions: Female gender, age in their fifties, and smoking predominated.
