Medical ozone: An innovative alternative for knee osteoarthritis in Peru?
Abstract
In recent years, ozone therapy has emerged as a complementary alternative for the treatment of osteoarticular diseases, particularly knee osteoarthritis. A meta-analysis involving 355 patients demonstrated a significant therapeutic effect in short-term pain reduction. Similarly, another review involving more than 460 patients found that intra-articular ozone therapy achieved improvements in pain and function comparable to hyaluronic acid. Even an umbrella review, which synthesized eight systematic reviews and 15 clinical trials with approximately 3,600 patients, concluded that ozone therapy may offer benefits in pain control, although protocol heterogeneity limits the robustness of the conclusions and points to the need for more high-quality trials.
