Introduction: The presence of rheumatic diseases at an early age carries a significant risk of impaired functional capacity and reduced perceived quality of life for patients; hence the importance of maintaining good overall health.
Objective: To describe the general characteristics of children and adolescents with a confirmed diagnosis of rheumatic diseases.
Methods: A basic, descriptive study was conducted with 169 children diagnosed with rheumatic diseases residing in the Chimborazo province of Ecuador. The general characteristics of the children and of the rheumatic disease were identified as variables. A data collection model was applied to organize and standardize the collected data.
Results: The average age of the patients was 11.57 years, with 57.99% being female. They were diagnosed with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis with negative rheumatoid factor (52.66%) and a disease duration of between 1 and 3 years (55.03%). 62.72% lived in urban areas, and 46.74% had a family history of rheumatic disease. At the time of the study, 57.99% had no disease activity, and 30.18% had mild disease activity.
Conclusions: There are high percentages of girls and adolescents with rheumatic diseases, a family history of this type of condition, and a confirmed diagnosis of seronegative polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. At the time of the study, a high percentage of patients maintained some degree of clinical disease activity.
