Introduction: Maternal and child health is a fundamental pillar for the sustainable development of any society, reflecting not only the effectiveness of health systems but also the socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental conditions of a population.
Objective: To evaluate the perception of students and tutors regarding the impact of research tasks on maternal and child morbidity and mortality.
Methodological design: An evaluative study with a descriptive-cross-sectional perception component was conducted in the municipalities of San Miguel del Padrón, Guanabacoa, Cotorro, and Regla from April to September 2025. The sample consisted of 40 medical students from the Miguel Enríquez Faculty of Medical Sciences and 20 tutors from the four municipalities participating in the project "Determinants of Health in Indicators of the Maternal and Child Health Program." Official statistics from the Maternal and Child Health Program (PAMI) were reviewed at the Municipal Health Offices, and an anonymous survey was administered to the study population.
Results: Prenatal education for pregnant women, education on infant care, and improved follow-up of high-risk pregnancies and infants were among the tasks carried out. No change was perceived in the maternal morbidity rate (MMR), but improvements were seen in the infant mortality rate (IMR), progress was made in the low birth weight rate, and there was significant coverage of prenatal check-ups. Furthermore, mothers' knowledge of infant care and lifestyle modifications for pregnant women increased.
Conclusions: The perceived impact of the tasks carried out by students and tutors of the project "Determinants of Health in Maternal and Child Health Program Indicators" was significant.
