Aseptic meningitis as a neuropsychiatric manifestation in patients diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a multifactorial systemic autoimmune disease. The objective of this research was to present a series of cases of patients with aseptic meningitis diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus, addressing the diagnostic process, follow-up, and treatment. Four patients are presented: a 49-year-old female, a 19-year-old female, a 43-year-old female, and a 14-year-old female, all with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus and neuropsychiatric manifestations, accompanied by fever and headache. In all cases, intravenous methylprednisolone was used for treatment, and a favorable outcome was observed, leading to patient discharge. Aseptic meningitis remains a frequent form of neuropsychiatric manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus, with variability in the clinical presentation. This study confirms that there are no specific complementary diagnostic tests, and that timely identification and treatment are crucial for optimal patient care, providing essential insights in this particular area of knowledge.
