Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects various structures of the body, disproportionately impacting women of reproductive age, and is closely associated with cardiovascular diseases. These cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, with a much higher prevalence in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe the relationship between systemic lupus erythematosus and cardiovascular diseases. To this end, a comprehensive search of the scientific literature published in medical journals between 2019 and 2025 was conducted in relevant electronic databases such as PubMed and Scopus. Recent research attributes a fundamental role to proinflammatory cytokines, functional alterations in endothelial progenitor cells, and abnormalities in T and B lymphocytes as factors that promote the early onset of atherosclerosis and vascular endothelial dysfunction in this population. In conclusion, metabolic syndrome has been found to have a significant prevalence in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, demonstrating a strong association between the two conditions.
