Salivary Citrullinated Salivary Proteins in Rheumatoid Arthritis and their Association with Periodontal Disease
Keywords:
salivary citrullinated proteins, rheumatoid arthritis, autoantibodies, serum biomarkers, periodontal diseaseAbstract
Introduction: The interaction between periodontal inflammation and autoimmune pathways may have relevant clinical implications, but requires more sensitive detection methods and longitudinal studies to define causality and temporal dynamics.
Objective: To identify potential biomarkers and priority areas for research, with a view to integrated care that promotes periodontal health and the management of rheumatoid arthritis.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted, which, methodologically, followed the PRISMA procedure. Ten original articles related to the research topic were considered, covering the period 2019-2025. Two academic databases were used in the search analysis: Google Scholar and PubMed.
Results: Periodontal disease is more frequent in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, salivary anti-CCP autoantibodies are associated with the severity of periodontal disease, and salivary citrullinated proteins are not a reliable marker for predicting the presence of rheumatoid arthritis. This evidence reinforces the important relationship between periodontal inflammation and autoimmunity in rheumatoid arthritis.
Conclusions: Effective periodontal interventions may provide systemic benefits, potentially by modulating inflammation and the autoimmune response, with implications for rheumatoid arthritis progression and quality of life.
