Introduction: When considering available strategies to optimize the quality of healthcare, medication management is a crucial aspect. Studies on antimicrobial consumption in healthcare institutions are increasingly important, serve as an indicator of efficiency and provide feedback to clinicians regarding the potential implications of antimicrobial use.
Objective: To characterize the consumption of antimicrobials at the "Miguel Enríquez" Clinical-Surgical Teaching Hospital in the period 2023-2025.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted. The study population consisted of all systemically used antimicrobials prescribed by a physician in the hospital during the study period. Data were obtained from the hospital pharmacy.
Results: The most frequently used antimicrobial was ceftriaxone. The most commonly used pharmacological group during the period was cephalosporins. Third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins accounted for 70.2% of all cephalosporins used. The thirteen most frequently used antimicrobials represented a cost of approximately 570 000 pesos.
Conclusions: The most frequently used antimicrobials during the three-year study were ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, and amikacin. The most frequently used pharmacological group was cephalosporins.
