Functional capacity and family repercussion of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis affects quality of life considerably so family behavior is decisive to optimize health and well-being of people who suffer from this disease.Objective: To assess the functional capacity and family repercussion of individuals diagnosed of rheumatoid arthritis.
Method: A descriptive and transversal study was carried out to patients from “30 de Noviembre” teaching polyclinic with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. The researched variables included the time of diagnosis of the disease, the follow-up by the Rheumatology Department, rehabilitation treatments and self-evaluation of their health state. The functional capacity evaluation scale, the visual analogical pain scale and the family repercussion instrument were the evaluation instruments applied to the patients and their families.
Results: Female patients between 60 and 79 years of age prevailed. 64. 1 % of the patients exceeded the five years of diagnosis; 51% presented a slight functional disability, 37.7 % presented a mild functional disability while 64.2 % had an intense pain. In the socioeconomic area, the high repercussion prevailed in a 39.6 %. The socio-psychological area revealed an elevated repercussion (37, 7 %) and a severe one (30, 2 %). Family functioning showed a high repercussion in a 35.8 %. There was a high repercussion of the health state (39, 6 %).
Conclusions: There was evidence of disorders in the functional capacity and health state that associated to the pain presence contributed to an unfavorable quality of life of patients. Their disease was not treated adequately and their families presented great repercussion in the areas studied.
