Correlación etiopatogénica entre periodontitis y artritis reumatoide

La artritis reumatoide y la periodontitis crónica y agresiva son enfermedades inflamatorias crónicas caracterizadas por una disregulación de la respuesta inflamatoria en un huésped inmunogenéticamente susceptible. La intensa secreción de mediadores inflamatorios condiciona la destrucción del tejido sinovial y periodontal respectivamente. Ambas enfermedades comparten factores de riesgo y tienen vías patogénicas comunes que conllevan finalmente a la pérdida de la función y discapacidad. Este artículo discute las posibles interacciones, particularmente relacionadas con el patógeno periodontal Porphyromonas gingivalis, que explicaría la asociación observada entre estas enfermedades de elevada prevalencia en el marco de los más recientes descubrimientos.
