Artropatías en el adulto mayor

Introducción: está reconocido que los pacientes mayores de 65 años son la parte de la población más afectada por las enfermedades reumáticas. El diagnóstico reumatológico en los ancianos se complica por las manifestaciones clínicas, que imitan los cambios relacionados con la edad.
Objetivo: sintetizar los aspectos generales del manejo clínico, el diagnóstico y la terapéutica de las principales enfermedades reumáticas inflamatorias y no inflamatorias en este subgrupo de población.
Desarrollo: los principales desórdenes musculoesqueléticos no inflamatorios que afectan a los adultos mayores son la osteoartritis, la osteoporosis y el dolor de espalda, mientras que las artritis inflamatorias predominantes incluyen la artritis reumatoide, la artropatía cristalina, la polimialgia reumática y las formas inflamatorias de la osteoartritis.
Conclusiones: es vital los académicos se involucren en los aspectos reumatológicos del envejecimiento y llamen la atención sobre lo imperioso que resulta impulsar la discusión reflexiva dentro de la medicina de la comunidad para abordar el impacto de los problemas musculo-esqueléticos que afectan la función y movilidad de los ancianos y la desregulación inmune en el envejecimiento, entre otros asuntos.
