Enfoque rehabilitador en la Artritis Reumatoide

La artritis reumatoide es una enfermedad crónica severa, sistémica debilitante de curso progresivo, pero variable en cada individuo afectado. Se caracteriza por presentar alteraciones inmunológicas tanto a nivel celular como humoral, las que se traducen en inflamación crónica, que conducen a la destrucción de tejidos articulares. La mayoría de los reumatólogos en el mundo concuerdan en que el diagnóstico e inicio temprano de la terapia por drogas modificadoras de la enfermedad y la rehabilitación precoz pueden limitar la severidad y discapacidad de la misma, según estudios epidemiológicos realizados en los últimos 10 años, la artritis reumatoide causa una gran morbilidad, dificultad laboral, e incremento de la mortalidad; también produce gran deterioro en la calidad de vida de los pacientes, pues el 29% de ellos presentan discapacidad de cierto grado para realizar tareas fundamentales. La discapacidad asociada a nuestros pacientes alcanzó el 6.4%, en la actualidad, aunque los tratados de reumatología que citan la importancia del tratamiento rehabilitador en enfermos artríticos, no parece existir una conciencia generalizada de su valor y hay una escasez de publicaciones en nuestro medio, que justifiquen este esfuerzo terapéutico.
