Tendinous surgeries in the rheumatic hand

Introduction: the affections of the hand in the rheumatoid patient cause disabilities not only of an employment nature, but also have a negative impact on their social interaction.
Objective: to reflect on the role of tendon surgeries in the management of the rheumatic hand.
Development: among the possible surgical interventions in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the following can be considered as fundamental: synovectomies, tenosinovectomies, arthrodesis and total arthroplasty. It is possible to use other interventions, such as bone resection of peripheral nerves, complementing the previous ones or alone. Osteotomies for axial corrections do not conform as an appropriate indication in this quality of patients.
Conclusions: in the management of the rheumatic hand, updates have been reported in the area of hand surgery, such as the advances that have been made in the design of some prosthetic implants, as well as the improvement of arthroscopic techniques, which make it possible to perform certain interventions which were considered excessively aggressive for the patient in previous years. At present, more than 70 % of rheumatoid patients present alterations in the hands with varying degrees of pain and functional restriction, reversing this process sometimes implies or involves taking into account, as a viable alternative, tendon surgeries.
