La lucha contra el dolor y la incapacidad funcional han constituido la piedra de toque de la medicina a través de su decursar.No resulta casual que uno de los escritos atribuidos personalmente a Hipócrates se titule: “De las articulaciones y luxaciones”. La incapacidad debida a enfermedades articulares es una de las mas extendidas por el mundo y afecta, no solo la salud y la calidad de vida de los enfermos sino la economía y el desarrollo normal de la familia.
Se afirma que la palabra “reuma” proviene de la raíz griega reuma, que significa fluxión o fluctuación y ha sido históricamente interpretada de dos maneras distintas: como inflamación expresamente articular o peri articular o como fluctuación en el sentido de cambio o variación de lugar, y aunque en verdad quizás es más precisa o acertada la primera de las acepciones, la segunda no deja de ser aplicable en muchos casos
