Health.
Objective: to systematize the elements to be considered in the diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica.
Development: a bibliographic search was made of the documents referred to this nosological entity in the last years, in the databases Medline, Biomed, Science Direct and regional SciELO, observing a poor list of documents that refer to to this entity; We included 20 investigations that showed high levels of scientific evidence, which were grouped, categorized and analyzed for the conformation of this review.
Conclusions: there are difficulties related to the identification in the etiology of rheumatic polymyalgia, it is significant the number of conditions of which must be differentiated making this entity a diagnostic challenge, requiring a high index of suspicion and clinical expertise. The knowledge of the clinical manifestations for the diagnosis favors its identification in early stages of the disease, adequately channeling the therapeutic options. The studies reveal evidence related to the following variables: age over 50 years, elevation of acute phase reactants, rigidity or pain in the scapular and pelvic girdle, being decisive for the diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica.
