Cervical spondylosis. The role of secondary prevention in spondylotic cervical myelopathy development
Keywords:

Introduction: Internationally, 70 % of patients with diagnosis of cervical spondylosis require surgical treatment.
Objective: Reflecting on a secondary prevention perspective of the in the management of cervical spondylosis.
Development: At present time the treatment of cervical spondylosis includes pharmacologic measures and surgical management, that in general do not have much to do with secondary prevention aimed at avoiding the development of spondylotic cervical myelopathy. There is few evidence about the effects of preventive measures and scarcity of information regarding what it would be the patient's optimal handling and the objectives to be considered in secondary prevention.
Conclusions: Surpassing the perfecting of surgical techiques and building a secondary prevention perspective in the handling of cervical spondylosis, as cardinal aspect of the comprehensive care to the patients with cervical spondylosis, should constitute a concern of physiatrists, rheumatologists, traumatologists and neurosurgeons in terms of upgrading clinical practice to provide an answer to the current need to revalue the role of prevention in the management of this pathology. A set of simple measures can contribute to prevent the transit of the patients through each one of the clinical stages of cervical spondylosis, avoiding the development of spondylotic cervical myelopathy.
