Promoviendo la salud y el bienestar en adultos mayores con osteoartritis

Introducción: El envejecimiento es un proceso progresivo e irreversible que condiciona una pérdida de funciones afectando la independencia y la percepción de calidad de vida. Esta situación se exacerba en personas que presentan enfermedades que afectan su capacidad funcional.
Objetivo: Evaluar los resultados de una intervención educativa orientada a la promoción de salud y bienestar en adultos mayores con diagnóstico de osteoartritis.
Métodos: Investigación básica, no experimental y descriptiva, consistente en la evaluación de una intervención educativa orientada a la promoción de salud y bienestar en adultos mayores con osteoartritis del cantón Riobamba. El universo estuvo constituido por un total de 373 adultos mayores, de los cuales 190 adultos mayores formaron parte de la muestra del estudio. Se utilizó la prueba de McNemar para identificar cambios en el nivel de conocimiento sobre hábitos y estilos de vida saludables.
Resultados: promedio de edad de 67,32 años, predominio de pacientes femeninas (66,84 %) y del tiempo de evolución de la enfermedad entre 6 y 10 años (43,68 %). La articulación de la rodilla fue la más frecuentemente referida como afectada (40,53 %). El 83,68 % de los pacientes refirió al menos una enfermedad crónica no transmisible. Al inicio de la intervención predominaron los pacientes con nivel de conocimiento bajo (53,16 %), mientras que al final del estudio predominaron los adultos mayores con nivel de conocimiento medio (49,47 %).
Conclusiones: La intervención educativa aplicada mejoró el nivel de conocimiento de los adultos mayores con osteoartritis sobre hábitos y estilos de vida saludables.
