La profesora Gloria María Varela Puente Nació el 11 de abril de 1922 en Palma Soriano, comenzando los estudios de medicina en enero de 1942 en la Universidad de La Habana, donde alcanza el título de medicina. En el año 1959 es nombrada profesora interina del departamento-cátedra de pediatría de la escuela de medicina y en 1972 se le concede la jefatura del servicio de misceláneas del hospital infantil “Pedro Borrás Astorga”, y más adelante la categoría de profesora titular. Realizó misiones médicas en Argelia y Mozambique, reafirmando sus sentimientos de compañerismo y solidaridad internacionalista. En el año 1984 inicia la docencia de postgrado como jefa del servicio de Reumatología Pediátrica del hospital infantil “Pedro Borrás Astorga”, participando en numerosas investigaciones y publicaciones fundamentalmente sobre esta especialidad. En su vida profesional obtiene múltiples reconocimientos entre ellas las medallas por 25 y 50 años de labor en la salud pública, dos medallas de médico internacionalista y la medalla Pepito Tey. El 8 de marzo del 2003, se le confiere la categoría docente especial de profesora de mérito del Instituto Superior de Ciencias Médicas de La Habana, y por ser pionera, maestra y guía de la especialidad de reumatología pediátrica, se le otorgó el nombramiento honorífico de “Madre de la Reumatología Pediátrica en Cuba”. Falleció el 28 de diciembre del 2005, tras múltiples complicaciones de su delicada salud.
